Independent Expert Process Solutions
PROCESS DESIGN
ADI provide process design services for municipal and commercial anaerobic digestion plants, wastewater and sewage treatment plants, and effluent and liquor treatment plants.
PROCESS SUPPORT
ADI provide novel support and optimisation services, ranging from conventional scientific analysis through to bespoke process monitoring, including process flow mass balancing and enhanced Key Performance Indicators (KPI) reviews as well as Process Safety Performance Indicators (PSPI).
ANAEROBIC DIGESTION
ADI are experts in anaerobic digestion with the aim to develop and optimise AD to maximise the conversion or organic wastes to renewable energy via biogas, producing a pasteurised nutrient rich bio fertiliser, whilst ensuring process safety, and minimising the carbon footprint and process emissions.
BIOGAS
ADI's AD systems are designed to optimise biogas production, biogas recovery, and biogas utilisation, and include bespoke systems for pressure relief, and separate dedicated foam relief systems for tank protection and system safety.
WASTEWATER TREATMENT
ADI provide process designs for wastewater treatment works, and have experience from single house 'package' plants to advanced wastewater treatment plants, liquor treatment plants, and nutrient recovery plants.
COMMISSIONING
ADI provides a range of commissioning services from producing commissioning plans, User Requirement Specifications (URS), Functional Design Specifications (FDS), and tailored site support and optimisation services.

BIOFERTILISER
ADI's AD plants produce a digestate that is suitable for recycling to agriculture as biofertiliser, with liquid digestate, dewatered sludge cakes fibre and liquid fractions compliant with the appropriate standards for sewage sludge and biosolids, including intermediate pasteurisation where pathogen reduction is required.
RESEARCH & INNOVATION
ADI partner with academia, water companies and individual operators to perform and collaborate in targeted research and Innovation, realising the full potential of aerobic digestion and its ancillary processes.
PROCESS SAFETY & EMISSIONS
ADI's AD systems are designed to maximise the production and harvesting of biogas, whilst reducing leaks and emissions to atmosphere, prioritising process safety, including the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmosphere Regulations (DSEAR), and the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED), and appropriate measures, alongside plant efficiency and the environmental benefits of utilising anaerobic digestion.

Jamie Gascoigne joined ADI in 2023, with 20 years experience of process design, operation and commissioning of anaerobic digestion plants.
Joe Mann and Steve Bungay joined the ADI partnership in 2024. Joe and Steve have nearly 50 years combined experience in anaerobic digestion, and have co-authored papers on pre- and post-digestion biogas and methane emissions.
ABOUT US
Russell Mulliner
Russell is a multidiscipline engineer with 30 years experience in the Anaerobic Digestion sector. He was Operations Director at Greenfinch Ltd, where he commissioned and managed the UK's first full-scale food and green waste anaerobic digester.
In partnership with the University of Southampton he investigated the eradication of pathogens in conjunction with mesophilic anaerobic digestion, thermophilic anaerobic digestion, and batch pasteurisation.
He was the founder of Managing Director of Marches Biogas from 2009 to 2020. Marches Biogas were responsible for the design, build, and commissioning of over 30 anaerobic digestion facilities, including the development of a novel semi-plug flow digestion system.
Dr Les Gornall
D. Phil BSc (Hons) CBiol FRSB
Les is a pioneer of anaerobic digestion in the UK with over 45 years' practice as a successful anaerobic digester, composting, and wastewater treatment engineer. During Les' professional career, over 10 million tonnes of organic waste has been processed in equipment he designed, commissioned or optimised, transforming waste into electricity, hot water, water, organic fertiliser and biomethane injected into the gas grid. Les designed the first full scale farm digester and organic composting system in Northern Ireland with Farm Gas and the Monks of Bethlehem Abbey, Portglenone.
Les has provided Expert Witness Testimony in over 15 cases and is trained in Civil Procedure Rules - Part 35 and Expert Meetings.
Steve Bungay
BSc (Hons) MSc MSc CBiol C.WEM FCIWEM MRSB
Steve is a scientist with 35 years experience in wastewater treatment, anaerobic digestion, biosolids and sludge treatment, and works on the design, commissioning, and trouble-shooting of wastewater treatment plants, anaerobic digesters, sludge and liquor treatment plants.
He has over 10 years experience as an Expert Witness and undertaking forensic analysis in legal disputes in the areas of sewage treatment, sludge and biosolids treatment.
Jamie Gascoigne

Jamie has 20 years experience in the anaerobic digestion sector and has led the successful commissioning of over 25 agricultural and foodwaste anaerobic digesters.
Joe Mann
BA (Hons)
Joe has worked in the anaerobic digestion industry for 13 years specialising in the biological monitoring and trouble-shooting of agricultural, foodwaste, and sewage sludge digesters.
